Project 5

The challenge in this project was to find moving subjects within an interesting enough context, I tried 3 different location/subject pairs:
  1. A bend in a road where cars slowed a little just in front of a major Munich monument
  2. The platform of a subway station to shoot the trains as they stop
  3. The subway station entry beneath Munich's central square, photographing people as they hurry to and from the escalators
I took sequences at all 3 locations and after evaluation decided that the most striking were the people walking.  Although the speed was no more than 3mph, the background provided the most interesting blur, each shot revealing more detail of the ticket office with the neon signs. The best shot here is the second image in this sequence, illustrating the increased speed of the arms and legs coupled with the spray of colour behind the figure.
The other two sequences were still of interest:
50mm, 1/4s, f/7.1, ISO 200
50mm, 1/60s, f/3.5, ISO 800
The sense of motion of the train in the first shot worked well, but it was very hit and miss to get the train at a good angle and have the pan motion in time with the train.
24mm, 1/4s, f/22, ISO 100
24mm, 1/250s, f/7.1, ISO 400
Once gain I prefer the 1/4s shot, the sense of motion works well and the fact that only the figure in the vans cab has any definition adds a point of interest.
Of all the shots in the last two exercises the surfer ghosting within a wave in Project 4 still has my vote, it imparts the impact of the surfer on the wave, but also the flow of the water through the frame.
